Are you prepared to lead and design the products, services and experiences of the future?
To succeed in design today, we need to embrace the impact that design has on business and on people and manage that impact through understanding the processes, systems, and creative tools that make it possible.
We know that the way design is led and managed is the key success factor, but do you have the skills, tools and processes required to maintain your career or business, and manage, lead and thrive into the future?
Do you know what is required and where to invest your resources for the maximum impact?
Across Ireland today, design as a practice is firmly established as a core activity in the initiation and realisation of new products, systems and services across business. Design has evolved in recent years, as demonstrated by the diverse spread of practitioners working in both consultancy and in-house in all business sectors. The opportunities for designers in Ireland have never been greater but this fragmentation brings some challenges in terms of how we, Design Enterprise Skillnet, can most effectively support the professional development of designers at work.
While design consultancies and creative agencies are relatively well understood, understanding the needs of designers and design teams who work in-house is more of a challenge due to the fragmented nature of the sectors and businesses they work in. Many who work in-house or lead design teams and businesses are engaged in highly creative design activities but may not have design as their primary qualification.
Design has matured significantly in recent years and is now recognised at a strategic level within an enterprise, as is demonstrated by the increasing numbers of designers in leadership positions in Ireland and globally. For designers in Ireland to reach their potential in their careers and to step up to the broader role of design in business, they will require a more diverse and sophisticated set of skills for a future that is evolving at an ever-increasing pace.
The purpose of this research initiative is to get a clear picture of the career and business needs of those working in design and to identify the professional development training needs of established and emerging design sectors. This is a cross-disciplinary study intended to identify the major design categories.
